How is the programme aligned?

This programme is a SAQA registered qualification aligned to Unit Standards.

Unit Standards

The fundamental component consists of Unit Standards to the value of 56 credits all of which are compulsory. Qualification rules state that it is compulsory for learners to do Communication in two different South African languages, one at NQF Level 4 and the other at NQF Level 3.

The core component consists of Unit Standards to the value of 77 credits all of which are compulsory.

The following elective Unit Standards to the value of 35 credits have been selected:

  • US 14947: Describe data communications (4 Credits)
  • US 14928: Demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts of telecommunication (7 Credits)
  • US 14947: Describe data communications (4 Credits)
  • US 14942: Demonstrate an understanding of computer network communications (9 Credits)
  • US 14934: Demonstrate an understanding of hardware components for personal computers or hand-held computers (7 credits)
  • US 14929 Describe computer cabling (4 credits)

Total Credits: 168

Who is the target audience?

This qualification is aimed at learners who are pursuing a career in the computer industry, or related fields and will provide learners with an entry level for further study in information technology and related fields, as well as for initial employment in the computer industry. People achieving this qualification will gain an introductory level of understanding about computer industry concepts and will be able to work in areas of information technology with little technical complexity.

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must meet the following criteria to enter the programme:

  • Communication at NQF Level 3
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3
  • KVR Training pre-assessment
  • Ability to use a personal computer competently
  • Competence in US: 14911 Participate in formal meetings NQF level

What is the purpose of the programme?

The purpose of this qualification is to build a foundational entry into the field of computer sciences and information technology, specifically into the field of systems support, covering basic knowledge needed for further study in the field of systems support at higher education levels.

A qualifying learner at this level will be a well-rounded entry-level systems support professional with a good fundamental knowledge of the information technology field, coupled with interpersonal and business skills.

What are the learning outcomes?

The learning outcomes from the qualification exit level outcomes will enable learners to:

  1. Communicate effectively with fellow IT staff and users of information systems.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of different types of computer systems and the use of computer technology in business.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of problem-solving techniques, and how to apply them in a technical environment.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of computer technology principles.
  5. Select and use materials and equipment safely for technological purposes.
  6. Work effectively as a team member within a support team.
  7. Carry out, under supervision, a small size task to demonstrate knowledge of techniques & skills needed in hardware and infrastructure support for personal computers and office products

How is the programme structured?

The unit standards of the qualification have been collated into the following 4 modules:

1.Communicate effectively in a technical environment

2.Mathematical literacy

3.Computer technology and principles

4.Data communications and network support

Note: Credit Accumulations and Transfer (CAT) exemption for specific Unit Standards is applicable to approved learners and CAT applications for approval will be provided on request.

Approved learners will have reduced contact days.

How will the course be delivered and assessed?

Facilitation strategy

We offer our clients various facilitation methods based on specific needs. This can include in-person, on-line, and virtual facilitation methods or a combination of any of these. Various learning techniques, such as simulations, roleplays, and presentations are used. Facilitators give feedback on participation, strengths, and areas for improvement. Practical application is crucial, requiring learners to apply knowledge in their daily work under supervision.

Assessment strategy

  • Formative Assessment is conducted throughout the programme during the facilitated sessions. Assessment activities are included in the Formative Assessment Workbook and will be checked by the facilitator. Learners are expected to complete all the activities in their workbooks.
  • Summative Assessment is conducted at the end of the foundational training phase. Learners are expected to complete summative assessment activities in the workplace.

What are the workplace requirements?

Outcomes-based qualifications require application of skills in the workplace. For this qualification, the following human and physical resources are required:

  • Line manager or team leader
  • Access to company policies, processes and procedures related to IT support processes
  • PC access with MS Office and internet access
  • Computer printers, scanners or facsimile machines

What workplace activities will need to be completed?

Learners receive guidelines for workplace integrated activities and in some cases specific workplace assignments to be conducted with evidence collection.

Some of the practical workplace activities for this qualification include the following:

  • Perform IT related tasks in accordance with laws, policies and procedures
  • Investigate of the use of computer technology in an organisation
  • Install computer printers and scanner systems
  • Deliver a presentation on preventative maintenance, environmental and safety issues in a computer environment
  • Handle a range of customer complaints
  • Resolve computer user’s problems
  • Resolve technical computer problems
