How is the programme aligned?

This programme is a SAQA registered qualification aligned to Unit Standards.

Unit Standards

The fundamental component consists of Unit Standards to the value of 36 credits all of which are compulsory.

The core component consist of Unit Standards to the value of 23 credits all of which are compulsory.

The following elective Unit Standards to a value of 108 credits have been selected, encompassing Unit Standards specialised to Chain Store Operations:

  • US 114894: Process payment at a point of sales (POS) (10 Credits)
  • US 114889: Record transactions (8 Credits)
  • US 114906: Mark merchandise and maintain displays (10 Credits)
  • US 114891: Count stock for a stock-take (5 Credits)
  • US 114912: Maintain a safe and secure wholesale and retail environment (10 Credits)
  • US 114900: Sell products to customers in a wholesale and retail outlet (12 Credits)
  • US 114911: Resolve customer queries/complaints (8 Credits)
  • US 117899: Pick stock in a distribution centre/warehouse (12 Credits)
  • US 243681: Uplift stock for return (5 Credits)
  • US 243679: Recommend orders for clients in a fast-moving consumer goods environment (8 Credits)
  • US 243673: Identify the role of the fast-moving consumer goods merchandiser in the wholesale and retail industry (8 Credits)
  • US 243676: Source and collect products for resale (12 Credits)

Who is the target audience?

This qualification is aimed at; individuals entering the wholesale and retail sector for the first time, informal business owners, and individuals working in entry level occupations in this sector. It is ideal for learners who: 

  • Were previously disadvantaged and were therefore denied access to further education and training, or management positions
  • Wish to extend their range of skills and knowledge of management so that they may progress within their chosen career path
  • Are team leaders or supervisors and wish to improve their management skills
  • See themselves as future managers and need to start their training at the lower end of management

This qualification could also be useful to managers of small businesses.

What are the entry requirements?

It is assumed that learners are competent in:

  • Communication at NQF Level 2
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2

What is the purpose of the programme?

The National Certificate: Wholesale and Retail Operations – Chain Store Operations, addresses the specialised skills and competencies required by entry level employment and positions within this sector. The framework equips qualifying learners with specific skills and abilities which, if applied, may contribute to profit and growth of their organisations.

The intention of the qualification is to expand job opportunities to learners as well as to enable them to access opportunities for further development and training in the specialised area of chain store operations. It also positions learners to move into other areas of specialisation in the sector.

What are the learning outcomes?

The learning outcomes from the qualification exit level outcomes will enable learners to:

  • Operate in the wholesale and retail environment
  • Interact with customers
  • Operate in a chain store environment

How is the programme structured?

The unit standards of the qualification have been collated into the following 7 modules:

  1. Introduction to Chain Store Operations
  2. Customer Service
  3. Business Communication
  4. Problem Solving
  5. Fast Moving Consumer Goods
  6. Handling Transactions
  7. Working with Stock

Note: Credit Accumulations and Transfer (CAT) exemption for specific Unit Standards is applicable to approved learners and CAT applications for approval will be provided on request.

Approved learners will have reduced contact days.

How will the course be delivered and assessed?

Outcomes-based qualifications require application of skills in the workplace. For this qualification the following human and physical resources are required:

  • Line manager/ supervisor
  • Retail customers
  • Organisational documents such as floorplans, copies of e-mail correspondence, job descriptions etc.
  • Exposure to all outcomes related to the qualification; this would include all chain store operations
  • Company policies, processes and procedures covering but not limited to:

  o Recording transactions

  o Customer service

  o Stock maintenance, picking of stock, uplift of goods

  o Shrinkage and security

  o Displays etc.

What are the workplace requirements?

The work experience modules must be completed in the workplace. Workplace requirements are clearly stipulated in the curriculum. For this qualification the following human and physical resources are required:

Physical Requirements:

The following physical resources are required:

  • Operational retail store/warehouse with storage area or Distribution Centre (DC)
  • Materials handling equipment
  • Equipment and documentation used for counting stock
  • Equipment and documentation used for picking stock
  • Organisation protective clothing (PPE)
  • Equipment and materials used for housekeeping

Should a workplace not have all the necessary physical requirements they are allowed to enter into formal agreements with other workplaces that do have the required list of physical requirements in order to achieve accreditation. KVR Training will assist and facilitate this process.

Human Resource Requirements:

  • Supervisor/Manager with at least 1 year experience of stock storage processes and procedures

Legal Requirements:

  • Registered as a formal business
  • Compliant with all relevant legal requirements for a retail store or distribution centre

What workplace activities will need to be completed?

  • Learners receive a logbook providing guidelines for workplace integration activities and in some cases specific workplace assignments to be conducted with evidence collection.

    Some of the practical workplace activities for this qualification include the following:

    • Safely mark and display merchandise while preventing shrinkage and losses
    • Perform start and end of day functions at a POS; process payments, minimise losses, replenish cash, and cash up
    • Create and submit process flow diagrams showing how stock is bought, transported and received
    • Complete the sales cycle with a customer according to organisational standards and procedures. This includes, identifying and overcoming objections, analysing and matching client needs etc.
