How is the programme aligned?

This programme is a SAQA registered qualification aligned to unit standards.

Unit Standards

The fundamental component consists of Unit Standards to the value of 56 credits all of which are compulsory. The core component consists of Unit Standards to the value of 73 credits all of which are compulsory.

The following elective Unit Standards to a value of 11 credits have been selected:

  • US 10022: Comply with organisational ethics (4 Credits)
  • US 110026: Describe and assist in the control of fraud in an office environment (4 Credits)
  • US 13929: Co-ordinate meetings, minor events and travel arrangements (3 Credits)

Who is the target audience?

This qualification is intended for any individual who:

  • Wishes to be involved or is already involved in the administration function within any industry, or non-commercial organisation
  • Is either employed or unemployed
  • Has attained the National Certificate in Business Administration Level 3 and wishes to continue on the learning path
  • Has worked in administration for years with no formal qualifications
  • Wishes to extend their range of skills and knowledge of administration
  • Is contracted in a learnership agreement
  • Was previously disadvantaged or unable to complete their schooling and was therefore denied access to further education and training

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must meet the following criteria to enter the programme:

  • Communications at NQF level 3
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 3
  • Computer Literacy at NQF level 3

What is the purpose of the programme?

The National Certificate in Business Administration Services Level 4 is designed to produce knowledgeable, multi-skilled workers who are able to contribute to improved productivity and efficiency within all commercial and non-commercial sectors. It is intended to provide the means for current workers to receive recognition of prior learning, to upgrade their skills and achieve a nationally recognised qualification.

It will also assist new entrants to the industry.

As administration competencies apply to all industries and to non-commercial ventures, there is an on-going need for skilled administrative staff. This qualification is intended to meet that need while enabling the learner to meet standards of service excellence required within the organisation.

What are the learning outcomes?

The learning outcomes from the qualification exit level outcomes will enable learners to:

  • Establish and maintain updated administrative systems required in the organisation including files and information management and stock control
  • Present information utilising appropriate report formats and writing style
  • Implement organisation policy when identifying and engaging suitable service providers
  • Adhere to organisational ethics and code of conduct in a general sense encompassing confidentiality
  • Participate in the implementation of fraud control measures within the learner’s authority level
  • Display cultural awareness in dealing with customers and colleagues to promote inclusion, enhancing the effectiveness and image of the organisation
  • Independently apply efficient time management systems to improve productivity by planning and organising work and setting goals for professional development
  • Monitor relevant media content in order to present a basic analysis of potential implications for administration and the sector

How is the programme structured?

The unit standards of the qualification have been collated into the following 10 modules:

7.Relationship in a Project Team

8.Budget Stock and Fixed Assets

Note: Credit Accumulations and Transfer (CAT) exemption for specific Unit Standards is applicable to approved learners and CAT applications for approval will be provided on request. Approved learners will have reduced contact days.

How will the course be delivered and assessed?

Facilitation strategy

We offer our clients various facilitation methods based on specific needs. This can include in-person, on-line, virtual facilitation methods or a combination of any of these. Various learning techniques, such as simulations, roleplays and presentations are used. Facilitators give feedback on participation, strengths, and areas for improvement. Practical application is crucial, requiring learners to apply knowledge in their daily work under supervision.

Assessment strategy

  • Formative Assessment is conducted throughout the programme during the facilitated sessions. Assessment activities are included in the Formative Assessment Workbook and will be checked by the facilitator. Learners are expected to complete all the activities in their workbooks.
  • Summative Assessment is conducted at the end of the foundational training phase. Learners are expected to complete summative assessment activities in the workplace and complete a logbook.
  • Final Integral Assessment (FISA) is conducted at the end of the qualification and learners are only eligible for the FISA once competent for all modules. The FISA will consist of assessment of knowledge, practical and reflexive components although these may be integrated.

What are the workplace requirements?

Outcomes-based qualifications require application of skills in the workplace. For this qualification the following human and physical resources are required:

  • Workplace mentor/supervisor
  • Access to PC with MS Office and internet
  • Company policies, requirements and industry specific legislation
  • Team members/colleagues
  • Learners must be exposed to all outcomes related to the qualification, this would include all business administration activities

What workplace activities will need to be completed?

Learners receive a logbook providing guidelines for workplace integration activities and in some cases specific workplace assignments to be conducted with evidence collection.

Some of the practical workplace activities for this qualification include the following:

  • Identifying weaknesses in current work processes related to time management
  • Analysing issues in the media that could impact the business sector or industry, then writing a short opinion piece giving an indication of the impact
  • Developing a PowerPoint presentation explaining: the need for clear structure in workplace relationships, the interrelationship between personal and professional relationships and how stereotyping affects relationships at work
  • Holding meetings with users and overseers of a selected administration system to identify ways to amend/improve the system
  • Using a template to record and propose new developments
  • Studying three case studies of fraud and summarising findings
  • Considering the use of statistics in the organisation by collecting samples of data and statistics collected on a monthly basis
  • Preparing a report addressing considerations under specified headings
