What is the purpose of the course?

The purpose of this short course is to enable individuals to conduct assessments within their fields of expertise, in a fair, valid, reliable and practicable manner. This unit standard will contribute towards the achievement of a variety of qualifications, particularly within the fields of Education Training and Development Practices and Human Resource Development.

What are the learning outcomes?

Successful achievement of the course outcomes will enable learners to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of outcomes-based assessments
  • Prepare for assessments
  • Conduct assessments
  • Provide feedback on assessments
  • Review assessments

How is the course aligned?

This is an accredited short course aligned to Unit Standard 115753: Conduct outcomes-based assessments. Total credits 15; NQF level 5.  

Who is the target audience?

This course is ideal for anyone who needs to assess whether other individuals have met learning goals based on specified criteria, using pre-designed assessments. Course attendees may include workplace facilitators, trainers, coaches, lecturers or mentors etc.

What are the entry requirements?

No previous assessment experience is required. It is assumed, though, that learners have a deep subject matter understanding and knowledge (practical and theoretical )about the outcomes they intend to assess within the relevant area of learning.

  • Planning and preparing for assessment
  • Preparing the candidate
  • Conducting an effective assessment
  • Questioning techniques
  • How to judge evidence
  • Disputes and appeals
  • Identifying your strengths and weaknesses as an assessor

Learners have the opportunity to conduct a short assessment during the programme while being observed by a registered assessor. Constructive feedback is provided to ensure a valuable learning experience.

How will the course be delivered and assessed?

Facilitation strategy

 

KVR Training offers our clients various facilitation methods based on specific needs. This can include in-person, on-line, virtual facilitation methods or a combination of any of these. Various learning techniques, such as simulations, roleplays and presentations are used. Facilitators give feedback on participation, strengths, and areas for improvement. Practical application is crucial, requiring learners to apply knowledge in their daily work under supervision.

 

Assessment strategy

 

  • Formative assessment is conducted throughout the course during the facilitated sessions. Assessment activities are included in the Formative Assessment Workbook and will be checked by the Facilitator. Learners are expected to complete all the activities in their workbooks.
  • Summative assessment is conducted at the end of the foundational training phase. Learners are expected to complete summative assessment activities in the Summative Assessment Workbook.

What are the workplace requirements?

Outcomes-based programmes require application of skills in the workplace. Learners must be exposed to all outcomes related to the Unit Standard. This would include all activities related to preparing, conducting, reviewing and providing feedback on assessments.

For this course the following human and physical resources are required:

  • Relevant organisational assessment and moderation policies and procedures
  • Assessment guides and instruments for the assessment at hand, including the relevant outcomes and criteria
  • Meeting and / or assessment venue, with relevant equipment and resources
  • Candidates to be assessed
  • Workplace mentor

What workplace activities will need to be completed?

Some of the practical workplace activities for this programme include the following:

  • Planning and preparing for assessments with two different candidates – including conducting initial pre-assessment planning meetings with selected candidates
  • Collecting sufficient evidence
  • Making assessment judgements
  • Having the assessment moderated
  • Providing feedback to candidates
  • Completing all required documentation
  • Compiling a PowerPoint presentation using official organisation templates describing learning highlights, lowlights and how learning was implemented in the workplace
