How is the programme aligned?

This programme is a QCTO occupational qualification and will consist of knowledge modules, practical modules and work experience modules, as explained in the qualification rules.

Unit Standards

The fundamental component consists of Unit Standards to the value of 49 credits all of which are compulsory.

The core component consist of Unit Standards to the value of 78 credits all of which are compulsory.

The following elective Unit Standards to a value of 37 credits have been selected:

  • US 15224: Empower team members through recognising strengths, encouraging participation in decision making and delegating task (4 Credits)
  • US 252031: Apply the principles and concepts of emotional intelligence to the management of self and others (4 Credits)
  • US 117853: Conduct negotiations to deal with conflict situations (8 Credits)
  • US 114226: Interpret and manage conflicts within the workplace (8 Credits)
  • US 12140: Recruit and selects candidates to fill defines positions (9 Credits)
  • US 252024: Evaluate current practices against best practice (4 Credits)

Total credits: 164

Who is the target audience?

This qualification is intended for managers who:

  • Oversee junior managers or team leaders
  • Manage supervisors and staff within their section
  • Seek to strengthen management competencies enabling them to successfully manage systems, processes, resources, managers and teams in their various occupations and contexts
  • Are pursuing opportunities to transfer between various specialisations within management

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must meet the following criteria to enter the programme:

  • Communications at NQF level 4
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 4

What is the purpose of the programme?

This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop competence in a range of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values creating a talent pool of experienced and effective middle managers that represents the demographics of the South African society.

The scope of generic management covers five domains: leadership, managing relations, managing knowledge and the practice of management. This qualification addresses each of those domains with generic competencies, so that it allows learning programmes to be contextualised for specific sectors and industries.

The intention is to develop the agility of learners equipping them to respond to challenges, and opportunities in the world of work.

What are the learning outcomes?

The learning outcomes from the qualification exit level outcomes will enable learners to:

  • Initiate, develop, implement and evaluate operational strategies, projects and action plans so as to improve the effectiveness of the business unit
  • Monitor and measure performance and supply continuous or innovative improvement interventions in the business unit
  • Lead and manage a team of first line managers to enhance individual, team and unit effectiveness
  • Build relationships with superiors and with stakeholders across the value chain
  • Apply the principles of risk, financial and knowledge management and business ethics within internal and external regulatory frameworks
  • Enhance the development of teams and team members

How will the course be delivered and assessed?

Facilitation strategy

We offer our clients various facilitation methods based on specific needs. This can include in-person, on-line, virtual facilitation methods or a combination of any of these. Various learning techniques, such as simulations, roleplays and presentations are used. Facilitators give feedback on participation, strengths, and areas for improvement. Practical application is crucial, requiring learners to apply knowledge in their daily work under supervision.

Assessment strategy

  • Formative Assessment is conducted throughout the programme during the facilitated sessions. Assessment activities are included in the Formative Assessment Workbook and will be checked by the facilitator. Learners are expected to complete all the activities in their workbooks.
  • Summative Assessment is conducted at the end of the foundational training phase. Learners are expected to complete summative assessment activities in the workplace and complete a logbook.
  • Final Integral Assessment (FISA) is conducted at the end of the qualification and learners are only eligible for the FISA once competent for all modules. The FISA will consist of assessment of knowledge, practical and reflexive components although these may be integrated.

What are the workplace requirements?

Outcomes-based qualifications require application of skills in the workplace. For this qualification the following human and physical resources are required:

  • Workplace analysing a business unit in terms of opportunities for innovation then developing a change plan creating an environment conductive to innovation
  • Negotiating for a specific conflict negotiation situation according to best practice. This would include; questioning, order to build common ground, establishing the existence of any hidden agendas, proposing a concession etc.
  • Analysing the organisation’s financial statements and providing a synopsis of aspects referred to in the statement
  • Developing tools to measure key performance parameters
  • Coaching a first line manager
  • Monitoring and measuring the results of coaching sessions
