How is the programme aligned?

This programme is a QCTO occupational qualification and will consist of knowledge modules, practical modules and work experience modules, as explained in the qualification rules.

Unit Standards

The fundamental component consists of Unit Standards, to the value of 36 credits all of which are compulsory.

The core component consist of Unit Standards to the value of 65 credits all of which are compulsory.

The following elective Unit Standards to a value of 24 credits have been selected:

  • US 7573: Demonstrate the ability to use the World Wide Web (3 Credits)
  • US 7571: Demonstrate the ability to use electronic mail software to send and receive messages (3 Credits)
  • US 7575: Produce presentation documents for business (5 Credits)
  • US 7570: Produce word processing documents for business (5 Credits)
  • US 10023: Identify internal and external stakeholders (4 Credits)
  • US 15224: Empower team members through recognizing strengths, encouraging participation in decision making and delegating tasks (4 Credits)

Who is the target audience?

This qualification is intended for:

  • Personnel already employed and other learners who intend to follow a career in management
  • People interested in becoming competent junior managers

What are the entry requirements?

It is assumed that learners are competent in:

  • Communication at NQF Level 2
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

What is the purpose of the programme?

The purpose of the qualification is to build the knowledge and skills required by employees in junior management who have had schooling below NQF level 3. It is intended to empower learners to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to operate confidently as junior managers in the South African community and to respond to the challenges of the economic environment and changing world of work.

This qualification introduces some theoretical concepts, requires the application of a limited base of knowledge and requires a well-developed range of skills that will enable qualifying learners to be informed workers in their chosen industry.

What are the learning outcomes?

The learning outcomes from the qualification exit level outcomes will enable learners to:

  • Co-ordinate with others
  • Make significant choices from a wide range of procedures
  • Operate within in a number of contexts
  • Make comparisons
  • Perform junior management functions
  • Maintaining records
  • Carry out simple research and tasks
  • Interpret current affairs related to a specific business sector
  • Recognise the effect of HIV/AIDS on the specific workplace, business sub-sector and own organisation
  • Apply knowledge of self and team to enhance team performance
  • Manage time and the work process
  • Explain the structure of an organisation
  • Conduct a formal meeting
  • Induct a new member of a team
  • Motivate a team
  • Describe the management function of an organisation

How is the programme structured?

The unit standards of the qualification have been collated into the following 7 modules:

  1. HIV/AIDS
  2. Business Communication
  3. Problem Solving
  4. Teamwork
  5. Introduction to Business Environment
  6. Introduction to Management
  7. Computer Literacy

Note: Credit Accumulations and Transfer (CAT) exemption for specific Unit Standards is applicable to approved learners and CAT applications for approval will be provided on request. Approved learners will have reduced contact days.

How will the course be delivered and assessed?

Facilitation strategy

We offer our clients various facilitation methods based on specific needs. This can include in-person, on-line, virtual facilitation methods or a combination of any of these. Various learning techniques, such as simulations, roleplays and presentations are used. Facilitators give feedback on participation, strengths, and areas for improvement. Practical application is crucial, requiring learners to apply knowledge in their daily work under supervision.

Assessment strategy

  • Formative Assessment is conducted throughout the programme during the facilitated sessions. Assessment activities are included in the Formative Assessment Workbook and will be checked by the facilitator. Learners are expected to complete all the activities in their workbooks.
  • Summative Assessment is conducted at the end of the foundational training phase. Learners are expected to complete summative assessment activities in the workplace and complete a logbook.
  • Final Integral Assessment (FISA) is conducted at the end of the qualification and learners are only eligible for the FISA once competent for all modules. The FISA will consist of assessment of knowledge, practical and reflexive components although these may be integrated.

What are the workplace requirements?

Outcomes-based qualifications require application of skills in the workplace. For this qualification the following human and physical resources are required:

  • Workplace mentor/supervisor
  • Resources: Calculator, PC access with MS office and internet access
  • Learners must be exposed to all outcomes related to the qualification; this would include all activities related to communication, problem solving, teamwork, communication and computer literacy

What workplace activities will need to be completed?

Learners receive a logbook providing guidelines for workplace integration activities and in some cases specific workplace assignments to be conducted with evidence collection.

Some of the practical workplace activities for this qualification include the following:

  • Interpret and respond to written text in a manner appropriate to the context.
  • Produce word processing documents and presentations.
  • Interpret current affairs related to the industry.
  • Conduct a formal meeting
  • Induct a new member into the team
  • Manage time and work processes of a team using a task list
  • Solve various numerical and language related problems
  • Deal with conflict as a team leader
  • Identify individual strengths and weaknesses as well as those of the team
